The sacroiliac joint or SI joint is a weight bearing joint that connects the sacrum to the ilium. It is a common cause of pain for patients and is located just below the belt line and just to the right or left of your midline. Common symptoms include pain at the sight as well as into the low back and possible radiation down the leg to the knee on the affected side.
Pain is generally caused by inflammation secondary to an injury or long term dysfunction of the joint as noted above right. It is common for long term dysfunction to lead to a visible unleveling of the pelvis which puts further stress on the SI joint causing increased pain. Treatment efforts work to restore function to the SI joint as well as the lower lumbar area through rehabilitation and mobilization techniques. Other therapies such as laser treatment to reduce inflammation can be especially useful as well.
